Dry Bulks

Workington offers excellent facilities for dry bulk cargoes. There are 6 berths with a total length of 500m. Loading rates average from approximately 600m/tonnes per hour, discharge rates approximately 300m/tonnes per hour. Vessels up to 10,000 DWAT can be accommodated.

Well established dry bulks are gypsum and perlite, which is imported by British Gypsum for the manufacture of plasterboard at their factory at Kirkby Thore near Penrith. About 200,000 tonnes of gypsum and perlite are handled every year at Workington and are discharged directly from the vessel to covered storage or open quay and road hauled the short distance to the factory.
